BARC interview questions - sample

Hi friends,
Glad to meet you after a long time. Recently, I have attended interview for OCES/DGFS 2015 in BARC, Mumbai. Many friends told about how the interview would be. But with own experience I am sharing here the questions asked for me. I have told "Thermodynamics, Fluid mechanics, Heat transfer, Strength of materials and Engineering mechanics" as my interested subjects. Then they have asked me the following ten questions. One thing I want to tell you, "this is the minimum level of questions they would ask. they can go to any level based on your performance".

1.       A diatomic gas is given Q amount of heat, during which, it has done Q/2 amount of work. Then find (a) the heat capacity of the gas and (b) the amount of heat required to raise its temperature by 1000C?
2.       Plot the following process in T-v coordinates. Take the system as ideal gas.

3.       Draw shear force and Bending moment diagrams for the following cantilever beam.

4.       A tank has two holes 1 and 2 at same depth as shown in figure. If both were opened at same time, water from which hole reach the datum line earlier?

5.       Plot Ts (surface temperature), Tb (bulk fluid temperature) with respect to axial distance for the fluid flowing through a pipe with (a) constant surface temperature (b) constant surface heat flux boundary conditions.
6.       A beam has rectangular cross section. If the height of cross section is increased without changing neutral axis location and width (see figure), plot the variation of normal stress along the height before and after modification.
7.       See the figure below. In two configurations the whole system is isolated from surroundings and the heat transfer is occurring only between the two blocks. Determine and explain which ice block would melt earlier A or B?
8.       The two-mass system with massless rod shown in figure is pivoted at A. It is released from rest from the state shown. (a) what is the velocity of mB just before it touches the spring (in vertical position)? (b) assuming very high stiffness of the spring (Hint: angular displacement of rod after touching the spring is negligible), what would be the maximum deflection of spring?

9.       If two persons P1 and P2 are standing on a horizontal rotating disk at centre and periphery respectively.  Draw the trajectories of volley ball as seen by P1 and P2 (a) If P2 throws the ball straight towards P1, (b) If P1 throws the ball straight towards P2.

10.   In a setup shown, what is the minimum velocity V of plunger required to draw water from the tank into the air stream?
