Hi friends,
This is the continuation of books list for mechanical
engineering. As I am pursuing mechanical engineering, I am referring different
books and then I am suggesting them here. So it took some time for me. I
thought that the reading material provided for various subjects in NPTEL is
enough to know the basics and to fulfil the requirements of a B Tech degree, but
if you want to explore more or if you are unable to access the NPTEL try to buy
a good book.
Design of Machine Elements:
Also called machine design. Machine design is one of the
streams of ME with proliferating future. Mechanics of solids and engineering
mechanics are the prerequisites for this subject. In this subject we will
discuss about different failure phenomenon and how to design various components
of machinery for a safe and reliable operation without failure.

Internal combustion engines:
“Internal combustion engines” is the heart of automobile
engineering. The mechanical engineering students should know the fundamental
operations of the IC engines so that they can design or invent in this field.

Refrigeration and air conditioning
Refrigeration and air conditioning, as all knows, is most
involved in our lives today. There is lot of research going on to
invent/discover environment friendly refrigerants for RAC and exergo economical
systems for RAC. First of all, as mechanical engineers, we are supposed to
learn these processes and developments. In this subject, we deal with different
components of industrial and domestic RAC systems and design and development of
those components for overall improvement in this field.
Material:
1. Refrigeration
and air conditioning by C P Arora.
2. NPTEL IIT Kharagpur reading material by Prof. M Ramgopal.
Friends,
I have seen only this material. If you have any suggestions please let everyone
know through your comment.
Metrology
Metrology is the science of measurement and
standardisation. This is not actually a
subject of B.Tech. Here in B Tech we are supposed to learn some instruments
which are used for basic measurements.
Tolerances, Limits and fits are also included in this subject.

Industrial automation
With the advancement of control systems and advanced
computer simulation software, the automation is playing a crucial role in
Industries now. For large scale industries it reduces cost of production and
improves precision in manufacturing. Industrial robots serve this purpose. Knowing
the basics of automation is intended for mechanical engineering students of
BE/BTech.

CAD/CAM
Nothing to introduce you about CAD/CAM. In this computer
era, this electronic device is helping us (ME people) a lot to cope with the
complex system design and development.
Computer Integrated Manufacturing is divided into CAD (Computer aided
drafting), CAM (Computer aided manufacturing) and CAPP (Computer Aided Process
Planning). We (ME people) are supposed to learn how drafting software works and
how to use them for different applications.

Friends,
For CAD/CAM, the video/reading
material from NPTEL (Prof. P.V. Madhusudan Rao
Prof. Anoop Chawla IIT Delhi) is very much useful.

If you have any book,
that you think helpful, please make others know through comment.
Operational research
As a part of industrial management, we (ME students) should learn
the OR models and techniques. OR now-a-days has become a part of almost all disciplines
of study. Optimization techniques are dealt in this subject.
Material:
1. NPTEL IIT MADRAS Advanced OR by Prof. G Srinivasan
2. Operations research techniques for
management by V K Kapur
3. Operations research, An introduction 8/E by
Taha
Finally, students from other branches can also interact
through comments to suggest books for your respective branches of
engineering/science.
